I was crowned just over three weeks ago, and I am still in a blissful state of shock. All of my hard work and dreaming came to a miraculous close when I heard them say my name at the end of that fateful sentence. "And the winner is......Julia Schliesing!" I was crowned Miss Minneapolis 2014 on January 4th, 2014. I feel beyond blessed. I was so shocked and overjoyed that most of my crowning pictures are of me holding my hand over my mouth in disbelief.
I would not have won this title without the amazing support of my family, friends, and loved ones. I want to thank the judges as well for granting me the opportunity to use this title to save lives and inspire.
Since being crowned I have not had a moment of rest! I have been busy planning multiple fundraisers for my favorite organization, SAVE (Suicide Awareness Voices of Education) which educates local communities about suicide prevention. The first big fundraiser is Wednesday, February 19th at the Station 19 Buffalo Wild Wings - more details to come!
I have been also keeping busy with vocal training from one of my wonderful directors Ashley Jacobson, as well as physical training from the great Adam Spiker. As if all of this wasn't enough to keep me busy, I have just began my final semester at the University of Minnesota. Needless to say, my dad can sleep easy knowing that I'm staying out of trouble ;).
I cannot wait to use this title to reduce the suicide rate in Minnesota. I have been so blessed with this title. I have gained a new audience to spread my message to, and a new family. I have new sister queens (shout out to my closest sister queen - Miss Saint Paul 2014 Rachel Latuff), and a new family of support in my fantastic directors Ashley Jacobson and Jodi Bostrom - and my new aunt Elizabeth Scipioni (Miss Saint Paul 2011).
I am the third Miss Minneapolis, and though I have big shoes to fill I cannot wait to make the shoes even bigger (literally - I have size 10 feet) and put my own mark on the title.
With great excitement and love in my heart,
Wishing you all the best,
Julia Schliesing
